Madison Square is certainly one of the most scenic spots in Savannah with the majestic live oak trees and flowering azaleas. The square was named for James Madison, the fourth president of the United States. Featured in the center of the square is a statue of Sergeant William Jasper, a soldier in the Siege of Savannah who was killed during battle. Notable buildings and popular shops that surrounding the square include the Sorrel-Weed house, St. John’s Episcopal Church which was completed in 1853, SCAD Gift Shop, E. Shaver Booksellers, and the DeSoto Hotel.
